Sopho’s six-year journey at Upgaming is a prime example of how to turn irrational fear into opportunity. Her path from Account Manager to Head of Commercial Operations & B2B is a story of tackling challenges, managing "mini-chaoses," and constant self-development.
— Sopho, six years in a company is a significant milestone. How do you remember your first day at Upgaming?
It was a day filled with so many different emotions. I was excited, but at the same time, incredibly nervous. I wanted to make a great impression on the team. To be honest, I was actually a bit afraid of the integration process - fitting in with the team and the company culture.
— What was life like before Upgaming? Was there a turning point in your career?
Before Upgaming, a large part of my life was dedicated to university. Enrolling in my Master’s degree was the impulse that pushed me to leave a stable, simple job and seek out new opportunities. I can confidently say that was one of the most pivotal turning points in my career.
— For someone completely outside this field - how would you explain what you actually do at Upgaming?
I manage many processes, both big and small. My involvement isn't limited to just running a department, which makes the work incredibly diverse. I meet people with vastly different backgrounds - we become friends, we debate, and sometimes we even argue! 😀 In the middle of all this "big chaos," I manage my own "mini-chaoses" in the form of projects, processes, and communications.
— What is the one skill that helps you handle this pace?
It might sound like a cliché, but it’s the ability to see every challenge as an opportunity for growth. This helps me overcome my fears and allows me to "dive headfirst" into completely unfamiliar territory. A "Can-do attitude" has almost become a habit for me now.
— What was the most difficult "invisible" barrier in your career that helped you grow the most?
Probably the fear of being challenged. In the beginning, Upgaming was a completely new experience for me, and I struggled to see where I fit in. I viewed every task as a scary exam where I absolutely couldn't afford to "fail." 😀 Over time, with more experience, my self-confidence grew, and I turned those fears into opportunities for development.
— Many think operations management is routine work. What is the main myth about your position?
People often don't perceive this job as diverse or exciting, but for me, it’s the opposite. This isn't a boring 9-to-5 routine.
— What motivates you on days when you’re feeling uninspired?
To be honest, in those moments, motivation is replaced by a sense of responsibility. I still do what needs to be done - just, perhaps, in a bit of a bad mood!
— What does your ideal workday look like?
I love busy days with interesting, non-routine meetings, but definitely with coffee breaks! The main thing is to finish everything I set out to do by the end of the day. If it’s sunny and springtime outside, it’s absolutely perfect.
— Imagine you’re closing another massive deal. What song would be the soundtrack for that moment?
Jay-Z & Alicia Keys – "Empire State of Mind."
— Finally, finish the sentence: "Life at Upgaming feels like..."
“It's lights out and away we go!” Just like the start of a Formula 1 race - everything here is incredibly fast, dynamic, and exhilarating.
